Guggenheim Museum

Experience exhibitions of modern and contemporary art in renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s landmark building!

New York City's Guggenheim Museum is home to one of the world's finest collections of modern and contemporary art and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century. It holds approximately 600 artworks that were either given to the museum by Solomon Guggenheim between 1937 and 1949 or were purchased by the foundation during those years.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation collects, preserves and interprets modern and contemporary art as well as explores ideas across cultures through dynamic curatorial and educational initiatives and collaborations. With its constellation of architecturally and culturally distinct museums, exhibitions, publications and digital platforms, the foundation engages both local and global audiences.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York is not only an internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century - it is also a vital cultural center, an educational institution and the heart of an international network of museums.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation was founded in 1937 with its first New York–based venue for the display of art - the Museum of Non-Objective Painting - opening in 1939. Solomon Guggenheim’s somewhat eccentric art collection made for an unusual gallery and provided many visitors their first encounter with great works by Vasily Kandinsky, and his followers. With the need for a permanent building to house the collection, renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright gained the commission in 1943 to design a museum in New York City. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened in October of 1959 and 60 years later it remains the architectural icon and “temple of spirit” where radical art and architecture meet.

Visitors can experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by museum educators. Founded on a collection of early modern masterpieces, the Guggenheim Museum today is an ever-evolving institution devoted to the art of the 20th century and beyond.
